Finding Happiness in Negative Emotions

Research update by Dr. Happy

I thought you might find the following research summary, from a recent edition of The Journal of Positive Psychology, interesting...

Researchers from the University of Texas tested out a new experimental writing design comparing a novel emotional regulation strategy with two more traditional approaches.

In short, they compared two established strategies for increasing psychological wellbeing, emotional disclosure and positive re-appraisal, with an integrated approach based on the combination of acceptance and re-appraisal.

So where as past approaches have typically recommended telling others how you're feeling and/or re-thinking the situation from a different perspective this new approach recommended a combination of accepting the situation as it is and then, re-thinking by looking for positive lessons.

Interestingly, the new, combined approach proved to be more effective and the authors concluded that this may well be the optimal strategy for building happiness after adversity.

As we've noted many times here in The Happiness Institute's free eNewsletter and also in my blog, "negative emotions" are not always negative in the sense that they're not always, ultimately, bad for you.

In fact, in many instances, if we can create an experience of post-traumatic growth we can often mature and learn from and become stronger or wiser following what might be, in the short term, unpleasant or negative situations.

Caring in the Community, Australia, 2009

In 2009, 36% of primary carers reported that their caring role had brought them closer together with the person to whom they provided the most care, according to a new report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This report is being released to coincide with National Carers Week, 2011.

For primary carers who were caring for someone other than their partner, 36% reported that the caring role had brought them closer together with their partner. For most primary carers though, relationships with partners, other family members and friends were unaffected. In 2009 there were 2.6 million carers in Australia providing assistance with core activities either for someone with a disability or for someone aged 60 years and over. Of those carers, 29% were primary carers. 36% of primary carers reported that their physical or emotional well-being had changed due to their caring role, and 50% had interrupted sleep as a result of caring.

There were 98,300 carers who reported a need for respite care but most (64%) of those needing respite had never used respite care services. Three-quarters of 15-24 year old carers were fully engaged in employment and/or education compared to 82% of 15-24 year olds who were not carers.

Mortgage stress building: RBA - ABC The World Today

While rates may be coming down in Australia, previously undisclosed documents from the Reserve Bank show that a significant proportion of Australians are already under serious financial stress because of their mortgage.

First home buyers who indulged in the borrowing binge inspired by the Federal Government grant in 2008 are under the most strain. A separate report shows that an inflated property market has left around one in 10 Australians facing poverty. And as David Taylor reports, one Australian economist is warning that we're seeing the early signs of a property market crash.

SINGLE PARENT SOCIAL CONCERNS INFO & NEWS

National Survey questions on welfare payments & Staying Power report

Anglicare Australia’s Executive Director Kasy Chambers today reported widespread support for a fairer welfare system. “There is a lot of attention now being paid to the unfairness of our multi-speed economy. People from all walks of life can see that the cost of living makes it impossible for people on very low incomes” Kasy Chambers said.

“That was a key finding of our 11th State of Family report, Staying Power, which was launched on Monday, at the start of Anti-Poverty Week. “As QCOSS reported a few days later, it is the cost of essential goods and services that are increasing at the fastest rate. With rent, utilities and transport costs continuing to rise, Newstart and Youth allowances at $35 a day or less is costing people their health, their chance of employment, and their wellbeing.

“Our research has shown that Australians generally support a fairer system.“The results of national survey questions we commissioned from the Australia Institute in September were very consistent across age, gender, voting habit and income level:

  • “55% of those surveyed believe welfare benefits should be set ‘to cover the cost of living’, while
  • “62% believe benefits should be set by ‘an independent body, without interference from government’, just as the Remuneration Tribunal does for Members of Parliament.

“There are many ingredients that are needed for people to connect well into society, as Staying Power points out. But an adequate income and safe secure housing are basic. “That is why Anglicare Australia, key national bodies such as ACOSS and the Welfare Rights Network, services such as St Vincent de Paul, and senior economists are all arguing for an increase in the Newstart allowance.

“The evidence we have is that Australian people across the board would support a fair system that could, impartially, ensure income support meets the true cost of living. "There is no reason why there can’t be non-partisan political support for that as well” Ms Chambers said.

PWP PARENTS REMINDER

We would like to remind our PWP parents that you are responsible for the supervision and well-being of your children at all times during a PWP function, outing or excursion including the school holiday camps.
PWP being a volunteer association is NOT able to and does not have the resources, accreditation, screening, licensing or insurance arrangements for assuming child or adolescent care responsibilities.
Parents need to be observant where their children are at all times. You are also responsible for the good conduct and behaviour of your children. You need to assess the risks of some activities in relation to the child's age and development. If your child is accompanied by another parent and their children then this is a personal arrangement between the two parents, and other parents or committee members can not be expected to assume responsibility. We need to publish this even though we know most people already understand this.
