HELP YOUR PWP NSW

WANTED – HOSTS FOR BRANCH FUNCTIONS

If you are a PWP Member and able to host a Branch Party or BBQ at your place, then please make contact with your Branch Vice President Programs and/or Parent Program Direct. We are a volunteer organization and hosting functions by members at their homes greatly helps us maintain the best activities program in Sydney. Contact your Branch committee this week – it helps them plans for the coming months.

Helpline

1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) is a free confidential service for any Australian experiencing or who has experienced domestic or family violence and/or sexual assault. It's available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new helpline provides information, referral services and qualified and experienced counsellors.

1800RESPECT is funded by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why not consider hosting a function for fellow members of PWP. Maybe a day time retirees function for mid-week days, a week-end family function or an evening parents function. Contact your local branch committee to discuss.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Finding health and happiness...you have to be joking!

More research findings from Dr. Happy

Following on from last week's research update we're happy again to bring you some more interesting findings from the Journal of Positive Psychology...

Researchers from James Cook University in Cairns, far north Australia, just published the fascinatingly titled article "Promoting emotional well-being through the use of humour"!

In short, they tested the hypothesis that "humour skills programmes" would assist in improving emotional well-being by increasing self-efficacy, positive thinking, optimism and perception of control, while simultaneously decreasing negative thinking, experiences of stress, depression and anxiety.

The good news (or the punch line) is that this is exactly what they found; and more so, the found that training in humour skills was significantly more effective than comparison conditions in which participants were encouraged to either do nothing, or to interact with others (a social group).

So we can now, with confidence, laugh our way to health and happiness. We can justifiably have fun and now we're doing ourselves good at the same time. Who knows, watching a funny movie might be as good for us as working out at the gym!

Lessons Learned in Life

Rest is more important than you think. People work too hard, forget to rest, and then begin to hate their jobs. In fitness, you see it constantly: people training for a marathon getting burned out because they don’t know how to let their straining muscles and joints recover. People who try to do too much because they don’t know that rest is where their body gets stronger, after the stress.

Support your Sydney Single Parents/Parents Without Partners NSW branch functions
and show your appreciation for all the effort our single parent volunteers
make to organise these activities for you.

CHILD SUPPORT NEWS

Supporting grandparents and their grandchildren

Separation and divorce can be difficult for everyone involved, including grandparents. Particularly when the separation results in grandchildren coming to live with you, either temporarily or for the longer term. As a grandparent in this situation, you may face new emotional, financial and legal issues and finding helpful services and the right information has not always been easy.

The Department of Human Services’ online support tool My family is separating – what now? provides information and links to a range of support products and services available to help during this challenging time. The website contains specific information and links for grandparents who have taken on an active parenting role.

The website will also help you find your way around the family law system and better understand your rights and responsibilities as a carer. You can use the online tool by visiting www.familyseparation.humanservices.gov.au

Sometimes typos can be significant ... especially if they cost you tens of thousands of dollars.

Sicilian police fined a driver 32,000 euros ($42,700) for illegal parking - a fee that usually cost 102 euros - because 2000 years of interest was added by mistake, Agence France-Presse reported, quoting a story in Italy's La Repubblica newspaper yesterday.

The 2000 years of interest accumulated because the police officer making the booking dated the fine AD208 instead of 2008.

"When she opened the envelope with the parking fine, the owner of the vehicle had a dizzy turn and had to be taken to hospital," La Repubblica reported.

PWP PARENTS REMINDER

We would like to remind our PWP parents that you are responsible for the supervision and well-being of your children at all times during a PWP function, outing or excursion including the school holiday camps.
PWP being a volunteer association is NOT able to and does not have the resources, accreditation, screening, licensing or insurance arrangements for assuming child or adolescent care responsibilities.
Parents need to be observant where their children are at all times. You are also responsible for the good conduct and behaviour of your children. You need to assess the risks of some activities in relation to the child's age and development. If your child is accompanied by another parent and their children then this is a personal arrangement between the two parents, and other parents or committee members can not be expected to assume responsibility. We need to publish this even though we know most people already understand this.
